One of the most common questions I get as a cake smash photographer in Melbourne is: Do you make the cakes for your sessions? The answer is no—as a busy mum of four, I simply don’t have the time! Instead, I source cakes from a professional baker to ensure they look picture-perfect and are safe for little ones to enjoy.
That said, if you’re planning a DIY cake smash at home and want to create something adorable, I have a fun and easy Cookie Monster cake hack for you!
How to Make a Cookie Monster Cake for a Cake Smash
This simple and cute cake design doesn’t require advanced cake-decorating skills—just a bit of patience and creativity. Here’s how to do it:
🎂 What You’ll Need:
-
Two round cakes (any flavor—store-bought works just fine!)
-
Buttercream frosting
-
Wilton #233 grass piping tip (for the furry effect)
-
Fondant, black and white (for the eyes)
-
3 cookies (for Cookie Monster’s mouth)
📝 Step-by-Step Guide:
-
Stack & Shape – Layer your two cakes with buttercream. Trim the top slightly to give it a rounded look, then cut an opening for the mouth.
-
Base Coat – Apply a layer of buttercream all over the cake. It doesn’t have to be perfect since it will be covered with ‘fur.’
-
Pipe the Fur – Using the Wilton #233 grass tip, pipe buttercream all over to create Cookie Monster’s signature fuzzy look.
-
Add the Mouth & Cookies – Place three cookies in the hole you cut earlier.
-
Create the Eyes – Roll fondant into two small balls for the eyes and add black pupils.
And that’s it! A super cute Cookie Monster cake that’s perfect for a cake smash session. 🥰
